Art of Interfaith Understanding

By engaging and discussing works of art, participants:

• Grow in their respect and understanding of the religious traditions and spiritual perspectives out of which great art has emerged.
• View works that deepen their spirituality and/or strengthens their religious commitments.
• Have conversations people  whose worldviews are different from their own.
• Develop the skills and patience necessary to look closely at art and understand the “language” artists use to communicate.
• Learn techniques of meditation and contemplation focusing on works of art.

The Art of Interfaith Understanding tours are led by the Rev. John B. Hougen, Ph.D., a consultant with Interfaith Philadelphia, and a volunteer docent at the PMA. Some tours include featured presenters or conversation partners. Most tours take place at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, while others are at other locations or on Zoom. Sessions typically run an hour to 90 minutes. Groups may arrange a private museum tour (6 to 15 people) or a virtual half-day mini-retreat by contacting Rev. Hougen.
